Spring Hike

I was born and raised in Southern California. I'm spoiled. I have never had to dig a car out of snow nor do I own an ice scraper. I can plant flowers in February and not wear a jacket or sweatshirt when I go for a hike in our local mountains.

This is my friend, Jen. She is the fabulous photographer that took the photos of my Mary Poppins party. We have hiked up this mountain (over 2 miles) 3 times this week.
This is what we get to look at when we climb. We are spoiled.

The California poppies are in bloom. The lupines are just starting to bloom. Rain clouds threaten but don't dare shed a drop on us.

I can't wait for my hike tomorrow morning!

It's Cookie Time!

It's Girl Scout cookie time! Did you place your order yet? Our cookies just arrived and Sheridan sold 81 boxes! We sorted them and wrapped them up in orange ribbon.

If someone bought more than 4 boxes, we put them in brown shopping bags.

Each person who bought cookies gets a thank you note from Sheridan. I even found a website that has recipes using Girl Scout cookies. Our troop is using our earnings for a trip to Sea World in San Diego to sleep with the Manatees in April. Please support your local Girl Scout troop when you see them selling out in front of your local stores. You don't even need to buy the cookies, they accept donations as well.

Burlap Wreath

I found this great tutorial from Tatertots and Jello via One Pretty Thing.

I used a 14" foam wreath and wrapped it in burlap. I cut (a lot) of circles in burlap, red check, red polka dot and turquoise fabric in 3 different size circles.

I just used pearl tipped straight pins to attach the circles.

I think it turned out pretty nifty!

I Heart Dancing

This week on I Heart Faces, the theme is dancing.
I took this picture backstage last year at the Nutcracker my daughter was dancing in. I love the silhouette on the dancer waiting in the wings in her tutu with all of the twirling action going on on stage.

Hair Pins

A few friends of mine are having a Valentine's boutique today. Marina sells Cookie Lee jewelry, Debbie sells Longaberger baskets and I am a Salt City candle rep. Yesterday, I decided to make some hair accessories.
I bought the plain hairpins and felt flowers, cupcakes, puppies and mushrooms on etsy before the holidays and never got around to make anything.

I also bought covered button kits and they arrived yesterday...perfect timing!

I made the display board out of the cardboard that my custom matting came in and covered it in fabric, cut out felt hearts and put the pins on my business cards and attached them with pearl straight pins. Wish me luck!

Fairy Terrarium

A few weeks ago on the Martha Stewart show, she had Julie Andrews on to help her make fairy terrariums. It was in keeping with the theme of Julie's new movie "Tooth Fairy". I was so enamoured with the idea, I decided to make my own. You can go to Martha's website for a material list. First, she suggests getting an extra large glass canister from Crate and Barrel for $28. I bought mine at WalMart for $12.97.
Instead of buying decorative rock at the garden center for $4 a bag, I got mine at the Dollar Tree for $1 a bag. I used 2. I also got my plants from the flower mart in downtown Los Angeles.

I mixed 3 parts orchid bark with 1 part horticultural charcoal. I went to Lowe's and asked for horticultural charcoal and the guy took me to the BBQ section-NOT the same! I also added some glitter-just like Martha. I misted the plants with water-that's all they need!

Here is how I made the lid...Martha used birch bark sheets but turned them over and used the "brown" side. I really liked all of the lichen on mine, so I used the top side. I cut the sheets into little squares and hot glued them to the lid.

I ordered 5 birch sheets from Sav-on-crafts and I used 3.

On the knob of the lid, I used wrapped wire and affixed it with hot glue. Martha used the top of a pinecone to adorn the top but my didn't look right so I just continued with the wrapped wire.

Here is the fun part! She used LED lights on the inside of the lid to illuminate the plants! I got mine from Sav-on-crafts as well. I used E6000 glue to affix it to the lid.
It looks so cool at night! This will be going on my new desk so I can have greenery with low maintinence.

Romantic Bunting

Nothing is more romantic than the story of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. I found this lovely bunting at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath.
It is made out of the actual pages from the book. This would be a fun idea for a children's room by making it out of a favorite book such as Dr. Suess or Olivia or...the possibilities are endless!
